The Science of Perfect Smiles

Advanced Digital Planning for Predictable Results

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a planning protocol and communication tool that allows us as dentists to design your ideal smile digitally — before any treatment begins. Invented by Brazilian dentist Christian Coachman in 2007, it focuses on giving you a perfect smile in complete harmony with your lips and face.

This innovative approach allows you to preview results, communicate preferences, and ensure the final outcome matches your expectations exactly. It's like having a test drive for your new smile before committing to treatment.

DSD is suitable for a wide range of patients, typically from 13 to 75 years of age, making it ideal for both early corrections and complete smile transformations at any stage of life.

The Science of Perfect Smile

Every smile is unique — we carefully evaluate multiple factors to create a smile that looks natural, balanced, and functional.

Tooth shape, size & alignment

Refining proportions for a harmonious look.

Color & whitening planning

Achieving a brighter, natural shade.

Closing gaps & black triangles

Improving symmetry and fullness.

Gum contouring

Correcting uneven gum levels for a balanced smile.

Veneers or crowns

Enhancing shape, strength, and aesthetics when needed.

Orthodontics / aligners

Positioning teeth correctly for ideal alignment.

Replacing missing teeth

Using implants or bridges to restore completeness.

Bite correction

Ensuring proper function along with aesthetics.

Smile designing is not limited to one type of treatment. Depending on age, your current dental status, and individual needs, it may include:

  • Laminates and veneers or all-ceramic crowns to improve shape, color, and alignment with natural aesthetics.
  • Orthodontic treatments to correct spacing, crowding, and bite issues.
  • Gum contouring and restorative procedures for overall harmony.

Good smile designing is not about making every smile look identical, white, and fake. It should match the person's face, age, personality, lip dynamics, and function.

Whether the goal is a subtle enhancement or a complete smile makeover, digital smile design ensures that every detail is tailored to you — creating a balanced, natural, and confident smile.

The Digital Smile Design Process

A guided approach ensuring you know exactly what to expect — before, during, and after your smile transformation.

1 · Patient Records & Photography

High-quality facial and intraoral photos, videos, CBCT scans (not all cases), and digital impressions from an iTero scanner form the foundation of your smile design.

2 · Digital Facial Analysis

DSD Software maps your facial midline, interpupillary line, smile line, and dental proportions as well as teeth inclination onto the photos to identify what needs correction.

3 · Smile Design & Mock-Up with Digital Simulation

The dentist with dental technician digitally reshapes teeth (length, width, shape, shade) in harmony with the face. If you have crooked or proclined teeth, you will require a correction of teeth alignment with braces or aligners. In some patients, the gingiva is also reshaped. Then a physical or printed "trial smile" can be created from this.

4 · Patient Preview & Approval

This is DSD's biggest advantage. You see your new smile as a simulation on a monitor or wearable mock-up before committing — reducing anxiety about your future smile. We call this a Test Drive for your future smile — you check the look and feel directly in your mouth. Once you approve it, we go ahead with the treatment.

5 · Treatment Planning

The approved design guides which procedures are needed: veneers, crowns, gum contouring, orthodontics, or implants.

6 · CAD/CAM Fabrication & Delivery

Restorations are milled from the digital design (zirconia, e.max, etc.), ensuring what was designed is what gets delivered. This helps us make your smile not only exceptional, but also functional and comfortable for years to come.

Why Choose DSD at Panache Dental

Cutting-edge technology, expert craftsmanship, and precision at every step.

iTero Lumina Intra-Oral Scanner

This is the latest and most advanced scanner from iTero. It captures precise teeth and gingiva data at twice the speed of older scanners, meaning faster and accurate scans with maximum patient comfort.

Smile Design Programs

Specialized software for creating custom tooth design and smile simulations tailored to each patient's unique facial features.

Collaboration with the Best Dental Labs in India

At Panache, we strive for the most precise and aesthetic restorations to match our patient needs. We collaborate with the best dental labs in India — specifically Katara Dental Lab, Dentcare, Illusion Lab, and Advanced Dental.

How iTero Lumina Integrates with the DSD Process

iTero Lumina is a digital intraoral scanner made by Align Technology (the same company behind Invisalign), and it plays a central role in the data-capture and communication stages of DSD.

Intraoral Scanning

iTero replaces conventional impressions with a fast, comfortable optical scan. It captures the teeth, gingival margins, and occlusal relationship as a full-colour 3D mesh in minutes — no gagging, no distortion, no stone model pouring.

3D Model for Design Software

The scan exports as an STL or OBJ file that drops straight into DSD planning software (DSD App, exocad). The digital model becomes the base on which tooth reshaping, wax-up simulation, and proportion analysis are performed.

Outcome Simulator

iTero has a built-in feature that overlays a simulated result onto the patient's scan in real time while they're still in the chair. This is a powerful case-acceptance tool — patients can see an approximate version of their new smile before any treatment begins.

Invisalign / ClinCheck Integration

Because iTero and Invisalign are both Align Technology products, scans upload directly to the ClinCheck platform for aligner treatment planning. This makes iTero the natural scanner of choice whenever DSD includes an orthodontic phase.

Lab Communication

The digital file is sent directly to the dental lab, eliminating the risk of impression distortion or model damage in transit, ensuring the final restoration matches the design precisely.

TimeLapse Progress Tracking

iTero stores every scan taken at the practice and can overlay scans from different dates to show exactly how teeth have moved, worn, or changed — useful for monitoring treatment outcomes and motivating maintenance.

The key advantage iTero brings to DSD is that it closes the loop between what the dentist designs on-screen and what the patient actually has in their mouth — the same coordinate system from scan, through design, through fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Digital smile design is highly accurate when using advanced 3D scanning technology. Results can predict final outcomes with 95%+ accuracy, though minor adjustments may be needed during treatment.
Yes! Digital smile design includes 3D simulations, mockups, and sometimes physical try-ins that allow you to see and feel your new smile before any permanent treatment begins.
The complete digital smile design process typically takes 2-3 sessions: initial consultation (30-45 min), digital scanning (15-30 min), and design review (30 min). Total time is usually 1-2 hours spread across visits.
Absolutely! Digital smile design reduces the risk of unsatisfactory results, additional adjustments, and treatment time. The cost is often offset by avoiding revision procedures and achieving better outcomes faster.
iTero stores every scan taken at the practice and can overlay scans from different dates to show exactly how teeth have moved, worn, or changed. This is useful for monitoring treatment outcomes and motivating ongoing maintenance. The key advantage iTero brings to DSD specifically is that it closes the loop between what the dentist designs on-screen and what the patient actually has in their mouth — the same coordinate system from scan through design through fabrication.
The cost of smile designing can vary widely depending on the type and complexity of treatment:

Teeth whitening – lower cost range
Veneers / crowns – moderate to higher range
Full smile rehabilitation (with orthodontics or implants) – higher investment

Each plan is customized, so the final cost depends on your specific needs and goals.
